Read the following SAT test question and then click on a button to select your answer.

If y equals ((x plus 1) times (x minus 2)) over ((x plus 3) times (x minus 4)), for which of the following values of x is y NOT defined?

Answer Choices

You got it!

Division by 0 is not defined, so y equals ((x plus1) times (x minus 2)) over ((x plus 3) times (x minus 4)) is not defined when (x plus 3) times (x minus 4) equals 0. The product (x plus 3) times (x minus 4) is equal to 0 if x equals negative 3 or if x equals 4. Therefore, y is defined for all of the choices except negative 3.
